Dr. Frances Widdowson attended the Red Dress event in Calgary, Alberta, organized by MMIWG2S+ advocates to honor missing and murdered Aboriginal women.
“They are diagnosing the problem as one of racism and colonialism,” Dr. Widdowson, a long-time critic of the “Aboriginal industry,” said. She argued that due to this misdiagnosis, violence against Aboriginal women—especially in rural areas—will continue.
“Eighty-six percent, I believe, of Aboriginal women are murdered by Aboriginal men,” Dr. Widdowson said. Statistics Canada data shows that, in solved homicides between 2014 and 2021, 86% of persons accused of killing Indigenous women and girls were themselves Indigenous.
Dr. Widdowson also argues that there is a higher level of prostitution among the Aboriginal female population. “Of course, prostitutes are very vulnerable people,” she said, adding that incarceration times for Aboriginal men are reduced due to Gladue principles. “So you’re releasing violent men back into Aboriginal communities, so all of these things contribute to higher murder rates of Aboriginal women.”
