How we’re funded

Funded by readers

Most of our support comes from readers who give once or every month. It covers travel and field work, court and records fees, and the editing and publishing behind each investigation.

Funding doesn’t buy influence

Funding doesn’t buy loyalty or influence over our editorial decisions. A donation supports our reporting in general. It doesn’t give anyone a say in what we cover, how we cover it or whether a story is published.

That leaves us a smaller group of supporters, but one that understands the standards we hold ourselves to and trusts our editorial judgement, because our credibility matters.

No ads on our website

We don’t run ads on our website. Reader experience matters to us, and we don’t want to interrupt someone reading about critical news with a distracting or questionable ad.

No government funding

We take no government funding whatsoever. To keep the level of trust our reporting depends on, our journalism has to come from a place of fairness, not strategy.

How to give

• By card. On our Donate page, once or monthly, through Stripe’s secure checkout. Visa, Mastercard, Amex and more. Monthly donors can cancel or update their card at any time through the Stripe donor portal.
• PayPal. paypal.me/bezirgan0 (one-time gifts in Canadian dollars).
• Interac e-Transfer. To abdusselambezirgan@gmail.com.
• Cheque. Payable to Abdusselam Bezirgan, mailed to:

Tax receipts

Media Bezirgan is a sole proprietorship, not a registered charity, so we can’t issue tax receipts for donations.

Refunds and questions

If you’d like a refund, ask within two weeks of your gift and we’ll grant it. Write to pr@mediabezirgan.com, which is also the address for any other question about giving.

Donor privacy

We don’t publish donors’ names or how much they give unless a donor explicitly asks us to.

Who owns Media Bezirgan

Media Bezirgan is currently a sole proprietorship owned by its founder and editor-in-chief, Abdusselam “Mocha” Bezirgan. We run on modest resources. Cheques are made payable to him, and e-Transfers go to his email address.
