The Humboldt Broncos Deportation Fight: Jaskirat Sidhu

On April 6, 2018, a semi-truck driven by Jaskirat Singh Sidhu went through a stop sign in rural Saskatchewan and collided with the Humboldt Broncos team bus, killing 16 people and injuring 13. Sidhu pleaded guilty to 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 counts causing bodily harm, received an eight-year sentence, and was ordered deported to India. He has been on full parole since 2023. This series follows his fight to stay in Canada, as told through court records supplied to us by Chris Joseph, whose son Jaxon was killed in the crash. It covers the rejected Pre-Removal Risk Assessment, a series of CBSA deferral decisions, and Federal Court Justice Jocelyne Gagné's April 2026 temporary stay of removal. That stay cited Sidhu's claimed suicide risk and his children's interests while his humanitarian application is pending. It also includes reaction from a Punjabi-Canadian trucker.
