Tim Uppal's Brother & Political Ties to Drug Cases

In March 2025, we published an in-depth review of court records about Raymanpreet Singh Uppal, the brother of former federal minister Tim Uppal. The records show that Raymanpreet was charged in 2008 with seven offences, including drug possession, firearm offences and impersonation. In 2014 he was charged with cocaine and cannabis trafficking after an Edmonton police dial-a-dope investigation. In both cases, Crown prosecutors withdrew or reduced the charges against him, while two co-accused were convicted in 2014. The report found that Raymanpreet listed the same Ellerslie Road address as Tim Uppal, their parents and Tim Uppal's wife, Kiran Bhinder, a Department of Justice lawyer and former World Sikh Organization executive. It asks whether those connections played a role. Related reports examine Conservative MP Jasraj Singh Hallan's own account of past gang involvement, a federally contracted prosecutor with a disciplinary record assigned to an 18 lb fentanyl case, and allegations by researcher Bob Rai about politicians' proximity to accused traffickers. No wrongdoing by Tim Uppal has been established in court.
