The man widely regarded as the poster boy for Canada’s broken bail system, Skye Atoa, had his proceedings adjourned to July 7 for a new bail hearing.
Atoa was granted $0 bail in mid-January by Justice Frederick Charles Fisher despite facing grave allegations of trafficking, kidnapping, drugging, and sexually assaulting multiple children as young as 14. Just half an hour after his release, he was re-arrested for allegedly breaching his bail conditions by being in close proximity to a child.
Atoa also faces a separate charge of sexually assaulting a vulnerable adult woman. His trial on that charge began last week with the alleged victim testifying, only to be adjourned to July 7 for bail consideration.
According to court staff, Alberta Crown prosecutors withdrew the bail breach charge earlier that same day. This appears to be the only breach charge on record, the one that had kept him in custody since January.
I have filed a formal request for the full court records to confirm these details and will provide a complete update as soon as they are received.
