Video report: BREAKING: The Scene in Wainwright at 3 a.m. After the CFB Wainwright Fire
We're on the ground in Wainwright, Alberta, the morning after a deadly incident involving a large fire at CFB Wainwright on Saturday, Oct. 17.
Hours earlier the town was busy with emergency crews. Edmonton hospitals declared a Code Orange, their mass-casualty alert, ambulances came in from across the region, and air ambulances flew through the night. By early Sunday morning, the streets were quiet.
We spoke with a local McDonald's employee who said staff spent the night making coffee and food for the hospital. They said more than a dozen paramedics came through, and customers kept offering to pay for them.
The Canadian Armed Forces has confirmed deaths and injuries but hasn't said how many, or what happened. The Municipal District of Wainwright says the fire is being held. We'll update as officials release more.
